Another reason to individualize patient education

Are you primarily providing health information to patients digitally? Do you refer everyone to your website?

Are you assessing their needs first?

More than 56 million people in the United States live with a disability. However, disabled Americans are about 3 times more likely as those without a disability to say they never go online. They are often less comfortable using the Internet. On top of that, many people with smart phones do not know how to take advantage of all their capacities.

Do not assume your patients are digitally competent. Assess. One non-threatening way to open the conversation, ask, “The last time you wanted to learn something, how did you go about it?” You may discover the answer is not, “I Googled it.”
