So what teaching methods work best?
A systematic review of patient education methods used with patients who had coronary artery bypass graft surgery found that teaching was most effective when:
• the content was individualized,
• given in a combination of media on an individual basis, and
• given in more than one session
This is consistent with previous evidence. Teaching is most effective and efficient when it is individualized to the needs of the learner, which is easier to do when teaching one-to-one, and when the information is presented in a variety of ways (combination of media) to reinforce those memory connections. Teaching over time is helpful because it gives the learner time to integrate new information into what is already known, process the information, formulate questions and obtain answers.
