Advice on patient education from George Bernard Shaw

George Bernard Shaw said, “The only man I know who behaves sensibly is my tailor; he takes my measurements anew each time he sees me.  The rest go on with their old measurements and expect me to fit them.”

It appears that George Bernard Shaw’s health care providers did not take time to assess their learners before providing patient education.  Patients don’t appreciate it when you assume you know them from past assessments.  We all change.  Take the time to find out where your patient is today, now, and you will build a relationship that will support effective education.
